There are not as many places in the world that are as warm and welcoming as South Africa, and Woodford is always looking to add to the warmth by upping its friendly service to those visiting the country. This week, Woodford Car Hire provides a few helpful tips for you, the adventurous tourist, who plans to make use of South Africa’s roads.
With South Africa’s diverse, natural attractions, its temperate climate and the simple road systems, tourists – especially those from Europe and other sparsely-populated regions – will find it quite easy to get behind the wheel and enjoy the space and scenic routes that this country’s roads has to offer.
Renting a vehicle from Woodford Car Hire is the most convenient option. All you have to do is simply choose the deal that suits you best (long drive deals offer excellent value for money and practical vehicles for hire), make an online booking in advance and collect your vehicle as soon as you arrive at any of South Africa’s four major international airports.
Woodford won’t just give you the keys and send you on your way, though. So here are some tips and advice that tourists might find useful:
An international driver's permit in conjunction with your national driving licence (authenticated in English if necessary) is required and must be carried whenever driving. If your licence does not have a photograph of you on it, then you must also carry your passport so that you can be identified. Traffic officers have the right to request your documentation when they stop you for any reason, so don’t feel threatened if such an incident were to occur.
Perhaps the most important aspect about driving in South Africa is to constantly remember that you must always drive on the left-hand side of the road. All rental cars are right-hand drive vehicles, so be sure to keep your eyes looking to the right for oncoming vehicles. The first rule on South African roads is: Keep left, pass right.
You’re likely to notice that many drivers on South African roads don’t always stick to the legal speed limits. It is highly advisable that you do stick to the prescribed speeds of all areas, which are usually based on the terrain and mapping of the road – factors visitors might be unfamiliar with. Speed limits are posted regularly, but just in case you don’t see a sign-post, keep the following in mind:
The general speed limit on national highways, urban freeways and other major routes is 120km/h (75mph);
On secondary (rural) roads it is 100km/h (60mph);
In built-up (urban) areas it is usually 60km/h (35mph), unless otherwise indicated.
Most petrol or fuel stations are open 24 hours a day and are spread along all of the major routes. Pumps are manned by attendants who can also check oil, water and tyre pressure, if required. Tipping for this service is not compulsory, but is highly appreciated. Many of these petrol stations have restaurants and restrooms – use them to freshen up on the long drives.
There are three types of fuel available: leaded, unleaded and ‘dual fuel’ – which can be used in place of either. Find out from the Woodford staff which fuel the car you hire requires and about the average consumption you can expect from the vehicle during a long drive.
Petrol prices are fixed and controlled by the government, and are payable on filling up, either with cash or card.
Wearing of seat belts is compulsory. All occupants of a vehicle are required to wear seat belts whilst travelling, and if you are caught not wearing one you will be subject to a fine.
There are strict drinking and driving laws in South Africa. The maximum allowable blood alcohol content is 0.05%, but it is highly advisable not to consume any form of alcohol before driving.
Using hand-held phones while driving is also against the law. You may, however, use a vehicle phone attachment or hands-free kit.
It is common – especially in rural areas – for wild animals to cross the road. Always be on the alert for this and pay attention to the relevant road sign warning of animals in the vicinity.
You’re likely to want to rent a mobile phone with GPS and data capabilities. Woodford Car Hire staff will be happy to assist and direct you to service providers within the airport where you can rent a phone or purchase data or airtime.
South Africa has a number of toll gates situated on its major routes. Maps usually indicate the amounts charged on these roads but, for further explanation, speak to one of our staff members before embarking on a journey.
No matter what your need is, Woodford will make sure you feel at home on South African roads.
