Public Transport in Durban

Durban Bus Routes

The Ethekwini Municipality’s Public Transport Department is responsible for most public transport on roads in Durban, including the systems and security that goes with it.

One of the most popular initiatives by the Department has been the launch of the “People Mover” – a fleet of brightly-coloured buses that travel through the city and the beachfront every 15 minutes.

Running along two routes – the City Loop and Beach Line – the People Mover charges R5.50 ($0.50) for a single trip or R16.00 ($1.40) for a day-pass that allows commuters to hop on and off as they please.

The City Loop starts and ends at the Dr Pixley KaSeme Street interchange, close to City Hall and passes The Playhouse theatre, Tourism Information Centre, Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC Complex, the Victoria street market and Durban’s mosque and cathedral.

The Beach Line is equally scenic and runs between the Northern and Southern city beaches, starting at the Suncoast casino and ending at Ushaka Marine World.

Passengers at either can join the route at the interchange during the day, with the People Movers operating every day 05h00 and 22h00.

Durban Trains

If trains are more your speed, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) manages all the stations in Durban through its urban branches of Metrorail.

Durban’s trains follow one of 8 routes that run from within the city to either suburbs or outlying areas. Durban’s two main stations – through which most trains pass through – are located at Berea Road and Durban Station in the CBD.

Commuters will want to first determine which station they would like to leave from and arrive at, and then purchase a ticket from either the station ticket office or Metrorail Ticket Officials with portable ticket machines.
